San Fran

Current location: Petaluma, CA
Total miles traveled: 4,436 miles

We had the best, best, best day in San Francisco today! It has likely been my favorite day so far on this trip. Our day began by crossing the ALWAYS foggy golden gate bridge and paying the $6 (highest in the country so far) toll. We weren't able to see to far because of the fog, but the bridge is always fun to cross.

Then we parked at the fisherman's wharf and started walking. I was very worried about leaving our bike with our little bag. We mostly brought it to carry stuff back in, but we put our helmets and sunscreen with it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that no one bothered the bag all day. We had some other motorcycles come up and jack some of our parking spot. They didn't purposefully do it since they fully intended to pay, but either way, they got to park for free since we had already paid the parking fee. They were from Germany so it was super hard to explain that the fee was paid. All I can say is that there were several thumbs ups and many "good, yes!" phrases used.

Speaking of foreign languages, one of my favorite parts of this city is the fact that there are so many languages walking around in the area. On one corner, we would encounter Mandarin Chinese; on the next, we would hear French; then, Spanish, German, and even Hungarian. It's an amazing world that we live in where all cultures are drawn to one mutual location, and able to get along while we are there. At one point, we had an encounter with another German family. We were taking pictures at the Golden Gate bridge and a lady walked up, said something in German and made a "picture taking" motion with her hands. We said yes please and she took our picture. We returned the favor and as we walked away, I told Ricky how cool it was that we had an entire conversation with absolutely no words. You know that is cool!

While in San Francisco, we visited Chinatown. Wow. It was culturally awakening for sure. There were skinned ducks, raw and dying fish, and headless chickens hanging in the windows for purchase. So sad! I have many hang ups with animals suffering to be our food and I seriously felt sick when I saw that decapitated duck hanging in the window. I bought a few little items and we enjoyed seeing all the cool stores and cultural things of Chinatown. Ricky bought a phone charger (his was misplaced) and then accidently became culturally immersed after we left. He looked at me after we left the store and said $10, not bad price. :) It was a great and unique experience.

We also visited the bay where we could see Alcatraz and a small part of the Golden Gate Bridge. Did you know that you have to purchase Alcatraz tickets 2 months in advance? Yeah, neither did we! We will need to plan a weekend trip to be able to check that off of our list.

On our way to and from San Fran, we hit the worst roads in America. Our motorcycle literally left the ground because of the grand canyon size holes. It was very scary. Also, San Francisco is so cold. The temperature literally dropped 10 degrees when we crossed the golden gate bridge.

It was amazing day and tomorrow, we will head to Los Angeles to continue our journey!
